2001 Lamborghini Diablo 6.0: Rarest of Italian Supercars

Lamborghini Diablo. To speak the legendary Italian supercar's name is to want one... now. The Diablo has adorned millions more wall calendars than driveways, and for the Italian supercar's last year of production, Lamborghini pulled out all the stops.

With a 6.0 liter, 12 cylinder engine crammed into a low, snarling package, the Diablo called to mind its namesake, most often seen in the bright Lamborghini yellow color that made it look like an angry hornet.

Today, replaced by the equally capable but much more common Murcielago model, the Lamborghini Diablo 6.0 will live on in the memories of car geeks everywhere, and in the driveways of the select few who can cough up the $150,000 the rare Diablo 6.0 supercars usually command when they come up for auction.

[From an Automobili Lamborghini Press Release, 2001. Translated from the original Italian by Google Translations.]

The new Diablo for the third millennium is a big step forward compared to MY 99 and summarised below the major improvements:

* new engine 6 litres * bodywork carbon fibre * carriageways front and rear enlarged * exhaust system improved * new 32-bit microprocessor for managing electronic engine * frame more rigid * completely redesigned cockpit * new air conditioning system

The Diablo 6.0 is a new comparison to the world of supercar. In fact the only possible comparison is with the MY 99 of Diablo against which we find an increase in engine capacity of 285 cc, which is then increased to 5992 cc, with a consequent increase in power, 20 CV, which now reaches 550 HP (U.S. version: 540 hp). The couple is being further improved to 620 Nm at 5500 rpm instead of 605 Nm of the model of last year.

In line with tradition Lamborghini were made several technical improvements to the management of electronic engine, the chassis, suspensions and exhaust system. The design of the bodywork is always in line with the tradition while presenting a new front bumper and spoiler with redesigned. The fenders were widened to fit track front and rear enlarged.

The whole body is now made of carbon fiber, except for goalkeeper, who for security reasons are still in aluminum and steel pavilion made because structural part of the frame. The chassis was reinforced with inserts carbon fiber which increases the torsional rigidity of the structure.

The new engine 6 litres V12 delivers 550 hp well, 405 kW (U.S. version: 540 hp, 397 kW) at 7100 rpm with a maximum torque of 620 Nm at 5500 rpm. It is equipped with a variable intake system, derived from well-tested system in use on Diablo MY 98 and 99 to ensure the best efficiency of filling and a good pair not only to regional rotation high but also to those low.

The new 6-litre engine mounts titanium rods and a crankshaft lightened, to improve performance. The exhaust system was redesigned to reduce back-pressure system and provides the Lamborghini ENCS to control the noise.

System electronic engine management

To ensure not only high performance but also good drivability at low speed, while respecting the anti-pollution legislation was designed a new version of the system owner Lamborghini LIE, made with components more powerful, like the 32-bit microprocessor, and particularly software sophisticated. The switch is made now with individual reels mounted directly on candles; injection is obviously sequential multipoint, as tradition of Lamborghini. The data acquisition system owners Lamborghini LDAS and diagnostic functions are integrated into the system.

Monitoring system noise exhaust ENCS

The control system noise exhaust ENCS (Exhaust Noise Control System) is a further development of what has already been adopted on Diablo MY 99 and GT. The special design of the exhaust conducted with a system of variable geometry that exploits two valves managed by the electronic system of the engine, allows better control of exhaust noise is low and at high engine speeds without loss of benefits.

* schemes rotation medium-low: the valves are closed, sections of the exhaust pipe between the valves and fittings "1 in 2" or "2 in 1" act as filters for noise. For each bank two tubes resonance in parallel, closed at the ends, are designed to dampen the medium frequencies * high-speed valves are opened and the different length of exhaust pipes, including fittings, act as filters for high frequencies for an effect of interference

Transmission

The transmission 4-wheel drive is based on well-tested system Lamborghini VT (Viscous Traction). The gear lever is positioned on the central tunnel, but in skewed position, to be closer to the wheel and therefore more at hand.

Chassis, suspension

The Diablo 6.0 has enlarged the roadway front of 60mm, with modified suspensions, better control of electronic shock absorbers and a more rigid chassis. The rear track has been slightly enlarged. It was obtained as a road behaviour of the highest level with a substantial improvement of the dynamics of the car earning as side effect, a greater comfort of suspensions. The pedal, thanks to increased roadway, offers more space for the comfort and drivability. Have been adopted rims again drawing in magnesium alloy.

Brakes

The braking system, as well as ABS, descends from that of well-tested Diablo MY 98 and 99, which has already proved its worth in the sport. The disks are large diameter (355mm and 335mm the front and back), autoventilanti with brake calipers for high performance and an ABS system last generation, even more sophisticated.

Bodywork

The body of Diablo 6.0 is new in terms of both design and technology. With its competence in the field of composite materials, reached by the department of internal Lamborghini, most of the bodywork is now made of carbon fiber. An exception is the pavilion and the goalkeeper. The front bumper, new design, complements the air-intakes for the brakes and two new lighthouses. The front and rear fenders were widened to accommodate the enlarged roadways and even the air for the radiators have improved. The rear spoiler is available on request, for driving at high speed.

Interior

The cockpit was carried out using the technology of carbon. All components such as seats, steering wheel, the dashboard, the central tunnel, switches and door panels combine elegance and comfort. The pilot seat was moved to the central tunnel to improve the driving position. Both seats have a greater longitudinal excursion. Have been redesigned both the dashboard instrumentation is to improve its visibility. The instrument panel is in carbon. All coatings are Leather items in carbon and aluminium view that contribute to its sports of the passenger compartment. The airbags for the pilot and the passenger are standard. The wiper has been amended to improve efficiency at high speed.

Air Conditioning

The air conditioning system is completely new to ensure the best comfort even in extreme circumstances. The air conditioning is integrated so that the pilot should simply select the desired temperature to keep it constantly in every situation.

The Lamborghini Diablo, the classic Italian super sports car and in its day the fastest production car on the road, reached its performance highpoint as the 2001 Lamborghini Diablo 6.0, the most sought-after production Lamborghini supercar ever.
